Instead of buying coarse sponge media from the lfs, what can I use instead and where can I buy it from?

You can use polyester pillow filler, I have used it before and it is dirt cheap, if you need it in sheets, I would think that quilt batting would work very well, just make sure it is 100% synthetic, natural fibers will decay underwater.
