cichlidfish!!!! lets give this site a facelift!

Postby dethmunkee on Wed Jan 30, 2002 8:24 pm

i was looking at the homepage of cichlidfish and it wasnt really the prettiest of all sites. when i first came into the board, i was sort of turned off by the homepage, but came to realize that the board was good.
some of the stuff on the site hasnt been updated in awhile (still has big brother stuff, oscar fry pics, etc)
the site should look good, and more options.
what would really look good is a gallery of fish sent by the board members, like arofanatics.com
also, i would suggest to change the color of the background Image
just my opinion

Do I hear someone volunteering for some work?? Image

Anyone can upload pics at www.cichlidfish.com/upload.html
click on the directory listing to see what's there already, http://www.cichlidfish.com/oscars/images/uploaded/

For MODERATORS and ADMINS we have areas they can post to only. http://www.cichlidfish.com/cgi-bin/cichlidpics/admin/admin.cgi

You can see those GALLERIES HERE: http://www.cichlidfish.com/cgi-bin/cichlidpics/pics.cgi

Let me know if you want to participate in creating web-pages I can make you an account like i did for Adam and Tony. For example check out their sites, www.cichlidfish.com/oscar2001/
and www.cichlidfish.com/Adam/
Tony's INFO on ICH on there was great http://www.cichlidfish.com/oscar2001/ich.html
and Adam's page on HITH as well http://www.cichlidfish.com/Adam/hith.html

I'm open to anyone willing to contribute. I will provide space on the server www.cichlidfish.com/yourbbsnick/ and if someone wants to create sample "homepages" we could use, if it looks good and doesn't use frames we may change to it....otherwise, it'll have to wait to whenever I get around to it. I'm already spending $200/month out of my own pocket for the site without making a penny back of it.(yea it's starting to hurt, specially since I just bought a new car...)

Adam and I are in the middle of a project at the moment. As soon as I am free I will get a few ideas together with Adam (Im sure Adam wont mind Image ) and see what we can come up with for a home page.

Boy Joe thats a lot of money each month. Whos the hosting service or is this a server in your home?

Well, in the $200 price I included what I pay for bandwidth etc.. as well as system administration, server maintenance, plus enhancements. man this fish hobby is quite expensive Image, my eletcricity bill is over $150 a month....(my heaters are all the 300Watt ones). Well at least i dont' have to worry about expensive fish dying like with saltwater.....

O yea, for HOME PAGE, some guidelines.
No use of "FRAMES" if at all possible. If frames MUST be used, I'd want duplicates of "navigation" links somewhere inside the "main" or "right" frame. Also, the main page must load very FAST. To test sample pages I recommend going to http://www.netmechanic.com/
and testing the page with their various tools there. It should be easy to read, and not have any flashing gif animations etc...
anyway, just wanted to put these guidelines out there so no one wastes their time on something I would never consider using. As far as backgrounds, I prefer not to use a "black" background color. White, or other shades of white or current color or maybe some nice blue would be nice. One of the things that I have on my "TODO" list is I plan on changing those "TEXT" links on the HOMEPAGE into their own "buttons" which will make them a lot more "Visible". I've heard people tell me some of those "text" links are very HARD to SEE.....

Yes, $200/month but this includes the system administration for maintenance and customization. There's something we're actually working on right now, a fish database, in the process of porting to mysql etc...
dethmunk, so do you have any experience with HTML etc..?

I took html programming in high school, so i know the basics, I am a pretty quick learner though, and I sometimes learn by looking at others pages. If you need my help I would be willing to help out. If you want to see my high school project, which hasnt been updated in over 1 year, then you can check it out. It is listed in my profile page.

Hi Michele,

funny never know with titles, we all used to be cichlid king's and now we're all cichlid "supremo's", next we'll be "the soprano's" Image ....i think Tony's changing those around if you think of a cool name let em know. Some on here are moderators and others are full-fledged "admins". You can tell by the title. All the admins have "cichlid supremo" under the name now. I think currently the active admins are Tony,Adam, me and recently Dethmunkee was anointed I believe Image
O yea, we always keep an eye out for dedicated members with the necessary web skills to be moderators. Criteria for "admins" is a little tougher Image

Hey Joe,

I'm an admin at another BBS http://forums.section31.com/cgi-bin/bbs/ultimatebb.cgi (I go by the name of Q here) and have had a little experience with UBB. If you ever need anything, just yell. Image
