Cichlid list

Postby mobilecal on Thu May 18, 2006 10:08 am

Could someone post a link that has a complete list of cichlids. I am new to ciclids(previous salt water hobbist) and I would like to learnmore about these and also actually what kind of cichlid I have. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks again.

Cichlid list

Wow! That's quite a list! There are an awful lot of cichlids in the world! I'd suggest you start by looking through our photo galleries. That should give you a jump-start. Then just follow any threads you find interesting for more info. Welcome to the forum!

Eric (forgot his last name) at Wisconsin U. had a website up called CHOP (the Cichlid HOme Page) which has since disappeared. There were literally thousands of species of Cichlids listed in his site, and he never claimed that he had them all named. It is a true tragedy to our hobby that his site disappeared, I've attempted to contact him to see if I could mirror it somewhere but have not been able to. Additionally, reading in the SACSG, where Alf Strasburg and other true scientists discuss South American Cichlids (a forum where I am afraid to post, friends, they are so far above my little Oscar head) we discover that new species of Cichlid are discovered and named all the time. The Cichlid family is far and away the largest family of freshwater fishfaces there is! So, mobilecal, you have a lifetime of interesting study ahead; one does not know where to start.:D

Cichlid list

Like already mentioned there's to many cichlid species to list and new ones constantly added.

Some good places to look

http://www.fishbase.org <-- can be searched by name or country,etc..
This might be a good start if you want a lot at once
fishbase - cichlids , by common name

My site's gallery (cheap plug ;) ) has pictures and names for a lot of New World cichlids my photo gallery

The American Cichlid Association has a fairly large list of names , but just names , not alot of pictures or info.

The cichlid room companion has articles , pictures and names of a lot of cichlids as well.

Good luck with the search, once the cichlid addiction starts, you can never find enough info :)
