Hi gang been a while since I have needed your help but now I have a doosey.
I have an Oscar that looks it may have HITH all over its body.
the "holes" don't look red and or nasty its just white. even where his orange is.
He has holes in his fins.
the holes in some places seem to be getting deeper.
he is lethargic except when he swims and rubs himself on the rocks on the floor of the tank.
This has progressed over the last month or 6 weeks. He has had holes in his fins but they have always grown back.
We are considering euthanising him because his quality of life just isn't there.
Is there something we can do to help the poor guy.
All perameters in the tank are perfect.
his only tank mate is a pleco. healthy as can be!!!

Hi Sabina

Hole in the head, can progress to become lateral line erosion.
After it progess's sometimes it get white "hairs' from the holes.
It can be caused by Hexamita, which can be treated with meds.
It sounds to me like it is pretty far progressed. You can treat Hexamita with METRONIDAZOL (food made by Tetra). Also soaking some food in vitamines (high in vitamine D) might help.
At present you might want to add salt to the tank, at a rate of 5 tablespoons per ten gallons. Just to help the O.

One Question, is it in the 20 gallon tank?

Yes it is in the 20. Why??
I isolated it from the other fish after he got to looking so bad. I was afraid the others would get it.
I'll add salt right away!

Sabina I made a typo, it was suposed to read one tablespoon of salt for every five gallons. If you have added the salt, you will have to remove the fish, from that tank. Then drain most of the water, and refill the tank.
The reason I asked was from your signature.
I was thinking to sugjest a hospital tank, but thought u had done that already.

No worries. I hadn't had the chance to add the salt and I was just coming back to find out exactly what you had said about it so I could add it. I have some CichlidVital on hand could it help?

I had just changed the signiture the night I had posted since I had done some changing to my tanks and gotten rid of some fish and had some "deaths in the family".
My "hospital tank" became the home to "Lucky" the only surviving member of my mated Dempeys. So now he's in the 20 Gal

I'll let you know how it goes and I'll keep you posted.
Otherwise is there a humane way to euthanise(sp?) him if it becomes obvious he is suffering? which I think he already is:(

I am glad....was a bit worried for a bit about the salt typo.
