Breeding Serpae Tetras? Anyone?

Postby Tank on Wed Jan 11, 2006 11:51 pm

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone knows about the breeding of Serpae Tetras. I have a pair and the female is full of eggs. I have an empty 10 gal that I can use, but I want to know if I need anything special for these guys. Do they breed like other tetra's, just spreading the eggs on a plant? Do I need to have gravel in the tank? My wife has never had fish let alone a breeding pair so I figured it might be cool for her and my daughter to see it. I wish I had my africans then at least I'd know what to do. Thanks in advance.

Serpae Tetras are egg scatterers, usually they just scatter them on the bottom of the tank.

Don't keep any myself. But some of the farms I visited in florida they bred Serpae Tetras in a tank with marbles on the bottom. Marbles allowed the eggs to fall through and not be eaten.

I never even thought of marbles. That's genius. Thanks alot for the idea and the reply. I was beginning to think I wasn't gonna get one.
