Breeding Devils

Getting them to tango...

Breeding Devils

Postby RedAngel on Thu Mar 17, 2005 12:37 pm

I have seven red devil fry in a 75 gallon right now. I really want to get a breeding pair out of this so I have a couple questions:
What do I look for, the signs of pairing up?
What age can they breed at?
What age to they usually pair up at?
Once I spot a pair I will take the rest out and put them in another tank. I also have a divider for emergencies.
Thanks

Signs of paring up are generally siding up to each other, lip locking, vibrating, chasing each other around the tank. These are common traits amoungst all cichlids. Your best bet is to do what you are doing, and watch and see if a pair form up. As for age, I am not sure with Red Devils. I suspect you could start to watch for signs from about 3" and up.

Wow, I've already seen that except for the lip locking. But they all chase each other around the tank. What do you mean vibrating? Like a shaking quivering? They also look like they push each other back and forth withough touching each others mouths. I can't explain that quite well but it looks funny.
Sorry so many questions, it's just so hard to tell because the same traits that apply to just being aggressive are almost the same as spawning behaviour. Do you think I will get a pair out of eight red devils?

age doesn't matter with devils as much as size and 3" (like already mentioned) is about the average size they will start to pair off.

If your fish display the behavior mentioned above but aren't missing scales and don't have torn fins, their likely trying to pair.

Aggression between red devils is obvious once they decided they don't like each other.

I'm moving this to the breeding forum. You ought to get more replies there. Sorry that I can't help you, I know nothing about breeding Devils. Good luck.
