as some of you may know i recently lost an O and want to get another one. i'm probably gonna get another albino since i would like to have a breeding pair. has anyone successfully bred albino's? do they have albino fry? any info would be cool.

Well as you know, I havn't bred albinos but from what I hear you can cross an albino with a tiger oscar and some of the fry will be albino and some tiger, kind of strange though because I can see STRIPES on most of my baby convicts and the female was the striped one but the male was a pure white(pink) convict. Guess i'll see as they mature..

are you sure you can cross an albino with a tiger? two different breeders told me that O's won't cross breed. is this just smoke up my ---? it would be great if you are right because i am thinking finding another albino that gets along with gil will be a challenge! jay and chuck, have you heard anything that might help me? talk to y'all soon, stay groovy, kait

As with all things I can never say I'm certain unless I've done it myself. But how do you think all the different varieties came about?(cross-breeding flavors) If you can breed Jack dempsey with a texas cichlid you should be able to get an albino and a tiger oscar to breed . Again might be hard if they don't get introduced while young(small).

have a question? if you can crosbreed, how hard do you think it's going to be to find an O big enough to cohabitate with gil and get along with him too??? is there a way to test own these bigger fish? is this common practice? wouldn't it be cool to find an O like what the new kid had to breed with!!! what's the minimum length you would suggest putting in with him? you know he's 11" and growing. i already bought a divider for this experiment. i just don't want a ton of new friends that need their own space or a lot of dead fish, know what i mean?! thanks for the help, stay groovy, kait

Hi Kait,

I'd say try to find some small mom and pop stores and ask them to "borrow" their big oscars to try out before you buy. Usually you kind have to be a regular customer that they know for them to go to the trouble to do that for you. If Gill really is a "male" I recommend getting a smaller female that he can EASILY subdue. If he's a real Tough fighter you don't want a too big female or the fights will be vicious. If female is smaller she'll learn her place I'd say get like an 8" female for your 11" male but make sure they have good space to avoid each other when need be.

learn her place huh:( just kidding:) hopefully i will have some pictures of gil soon for you. i don't want to start looking for a mate until i know what i have. since i don't feed feeders how can i go about overstuffing my gil so you can better see the tubes? same way i guess huh?

Hi Kait,

When fish is so big as yours, you should be able to get a good look at the tube just by gradually raising water temperature to about 86F, and yes it's better to feed lots of food also esp. high protein, ie live food etc...my pair just laid eggs Sept 2, 2000. It's the same pair that you saw pictures of. As usual the tank was NOT in good water condition when they decided to spawn! well i'll just wait and see if fry survives...I did see some tails sticking out on some of them already. Funny thing another pair in other tank just spawned today also!....anyway one of these days....man not enough time, i have Video Tape of my oscars in the process of LAying Eggs etc...and yea try to take some hi-res pictures at many diff angles, short video clips ok too, like 10seconds but like Half-NTSC minimum res.
