I'm pretty new to this game and appreciate all the information you have here. I have a question for you. The other day I was in the pet store and saw Blueberry Oscars. Are they natural or has someone dyed them? Any advice you could give me on them would be helpful. Thanks. beverlyannturner1@hotmail.com

Blueberry Oscars??

Hi Beverly,

Welcome to the forums, as far as I know those are definitely dyed fish. I'm not aware of any blueberry oscars. They probably soaked them in dye or injected them. I wouldn't recommend buying them, instead consider red, gold oscars or tiger, or albino oscars.

Hi

I'm new to the forum also. Looks liike the blueberry oscars are also.

I have seen them posted for sale and a few pictures. As far as I can tell they are not dyed. They are likely just bred for their color pattern. If you could post a picture of them that would be helpful.
Look around on various other fish retail sites on the web. You will likely find a picture or two and some additional information. I'll let you know if I find any more info.

That didn't take long...

Check this site out. For sale, not dyed.

I looked at that link, now if THOSE are what you call "Blueberry" oscars then yes those don't look dyed. BUT to me they just look like ordinary albino/lutino's......

I agree that they look like ordinary oscars. Don't have any info on them, but based on the picture I'd say lutino.....just a different name.

Blueberry (yellow, strawberry and raseberry) Oscars are dyed don't waste your $$.
From what I've been told bye wholesalers the blueberries are dipped (sometimes in ich med.,sometimes in dye) after their slim coat is removed and the yellow strawberry and raseberries are injected.Either way alot of them die and ALL of them just lose their color.

Those are "blueberries" in Nermal's link thats how those bright blue blueberries look after about a month, look real hard and you'll see the faint blue tint, not alot of blue since they've lost most of it.

The last time I saw TRUE BLUE (slate colored) Oscars for sale they were quite a few thousand dollars a pair so don't let some pet store flunky sell you so called real blue oscars that are dyed for $10-$20

Thanks, I didn't realize that they were dyed. They looked normal to me. Of corse, you saw the pictures I was looking at. There ought to be a law against "dying" fish. I'd like to see the ASPCA get ahold of the individuals that do that. I suppose I deserve a little critisism as I "assumed" that blueberry was just a new common name for the way a particular strain had been bred. It may very well be that. But, it aparently does refer to dyed fish also. You know what yhey say about assume. Sorry, and thanks for the enlightenment. :)

Not a problem, thats what boards like this are for.

And after I reread my post I hope Nermal or anyone else for that matter doesn't think my "pet store flunky " comment was directed at anyone here.If it came of that way it wasn't meant to.The stories about these guys in petshops are outrageous. And I can't stand the B.S. stories some places tell to sell these fish at a higher price for a lesser fish especially when so many good oscars are wasted in the process.
