Getting them to tango...

biting each other

Postby Conrad/Denise on Mon Feb 11, 2002 12:01 am

We need help right away! Our tiger oscar is trying to bite the red oscar. They have been in the same tank since very small and now all of a sudden he keeps trying to bite at the other oscar. Is this a mating habit or what. How do you tell if you have a male and a female or two males or two females.

Natuaral oscar stuff
Maybe the beginings of mating behaivour
Are they mouth locking, slapping tails etc.
How big is the tank they are in.
If you feel they are hurting each other then a divider will protect them from each other till they cool down

Pretty hard to sex if you post some pics Joe may be able to give you his opinion on what sex they are.

I havent really noticed them slapping tails. But something I have noticed them doing is when they do touch each other their tails will quiver and shake. Right now the one is just laying at the bottom of the tank in the corner on the rocks. Should we take our algie eater out of the tank?

for now we have decided to seperate the two of them as the red has almost all of the scales on the side of her picked and bitten away. Do the scales regenerate themselves. or will it stay this way.
we would like to have little frys but we are not willing to risk loosing our adult oscar to do it. Maybe we will try again after they cool down.

The scales will come back in a short time. I agree with Tony..it sounds like mating behavior to me too. It's a shame that they got so rough that you had to seperate them.

Yeah that's what I tell Melanie, but she wants to get rid of it and get a female tiger. I would definitely keep it. Both are beautiful fish.

I has seen alot of Red o's but not many have so much color.

Good luck finding another female that will breed with your male. That might be a problem.

Our injured Oscar died Saturday night. We had seperated them from fighting and put a medicine in the water to help heal the open wounds but it didn't work. Our oscar had not eaten and the infection was really bad and she died

Your oscars are definitely mating sometimes oscars mate roughly and tend to draw blood but they will be ok.Keep a close eye on them if the behavior gets worse though and remove any objects that they can hurt themselves on. If they have any tankmates in there with them remove them or else they will kill them. Better yet you can seperate them like Tony said by placing a divider between the two of them and lay a piece of slate near the divider that way the female can lay eggs and the male can stiil fertilize them.Good luck
