I got a "jumbo" (bout 8" tall) sword plant like 3 days ago. when I bought it some of the leaves were a yellowish color. ever since I had it, the leaves with the yellow have turned yellow much farther down the leaf and some of the leaves around it turned yellow at the tip. This means that those leaves are dying, right? all of the more central leaves (the newer ones in the center) seem fine. I think that the plant is just getting used to my water quality since the plant was in the lfs for at least 5 years (ever since I started going there). I have an aqua-glo light tube. The lfs lady said that if the light is new, which it is, then it is fine. is it? she said that after it gets old then I should get a power-glo. does anyone know a good plant website? This is my first real plant experience, so please let me know what the do's and don'ts of plant care Image
it is in my 125 oscar tank(I was pleasantly suprised that they haven't molested it! especially after they killed my two shark cats! Image )
my pH is around 7.5(ish)
nitrates: 5
nitrates: 0
temp: 78
two 3' aquaglo light tubes(not side-by-side, lengh wise ie -- not =)

forgive me I any part of my message does not make an sense, I have been studying shakespeare's romeo and juliet - ALL DAY - Image

Don't worry too much about the leaves, the plant needs some time to get used to your different water and light conditions and probably will lose some leaves. Also, it will first start to send its roots through the ground. This may take several months, and suddenly they start growing. Depending on the species they can grow BIG, so 8" is not yet a "jumbo" Image

There's a lot of controversial discussion among the plant profis concerning the best light colour, but mine grew just fine with cheap daylight tubes until it was too big for my 50 gal. I'd change the light tubes every 1/2 to 1 year, not all at once to prevent light shock. In general, the rule for plants is "the more light, the better" unless you have any that like less light.

The best results in growth can be seen when using CO2-fertilization, but they can do without. You'll need some fertilizers though from time to time, perhaps start with tabs placed in the gravel, and later add liquids regularly. I think sword plants like extra iron to prevent chlorosis - ALL leaves turning yellow. Perhaps try to get fertilizers without nitrate and phosphate to prevent algae growth. But your nitrates are low, so it shouldn't matter. Your pH and temp should be fine.

I don't know an English plant side, but a search with google should give lots of results. Or you may try the Dennerle plant database first (German company specialized in aquarium plants) to find out which species you have. Use the link below, click "plants" and search for "Echinodorus", you'll get lots of images of the different species and their requirements.

Maybe, but as there are so many species and I'm no expert, I can't tell the difference. However, it really looks like one of the big ones and similar to the one I had.

Just take dead leaves out and fertilize it from time to time, most of them are quite undemanding.
