Getting them to tango...

am I seeing things?

Postby C4 on Fri Oct 19, 2001 2:27 pm

I do not think I am having visual hallucinations, but something is just not right. I physically sat there and watched my pair of auratus's lie their eggs and the male fertilize them. (they have spawned once before and the fry are alomst ready to sell) then a few days later the fry hatched. Well of course I was happy. But now I have noticed that their is no way that this set of fry they are raising are auratuses! They appear to be a catfish type! They do share their tank with 2 synodontis catfish . . .Somebody enlighten me! The only difference was that the eggs hatched 2-3 days later then the last batch.

Yeah they are. My auratus are still raising the fry as if it is their own!

My cam has not been working, but Ill try to find one and post pics. Have you ever heard of anything like this? Is that a natural thing for cats to do? (all fun, and no work when the babes show up?)

Well, don't know too much about them but I have heard breeding pairs "adopting" other fry but it's usually when they already have fry of their own and the other ones are about the same size etc....

is it possible that the catfish fry are intermingled with the Auratus fry? Do they all look exactly the same or do some look slightly differant?

They all look identical, its easier to tell now that they are free swimming. If their are any auratus I cant spot any yet.
