Adding salt to freshwater tanks

I've looked up on many websites that adding salt to freshwater aquariums is beneficial to the fish. They say it will provide electrolytes and and help them breath. Do ya'll recommend this?

I use salt, as with anything there are pros and cons. Personally other than the long term build up of organic compounds, I have felt salt has kept my tanks and fish healther than if I didn't use it.

Fuzzy, what do you mean by the build up of organic compounds? And would having salt in the tank require more work?

I have always used salt in my tank and have had no problems. I think it helps destress the fish and provides electrolytes for peak coloration.

I use a short tablespoon for every 5 gal of water. The box calls for a rounded tablespoon but I think that is too much.

Check the profile on each of your fish. Some fish really like salt or even need some of it and others can't stand it and will get sick. Research is the best way to know for sure.
