Salt water is NOT easy to care for, stay with a fresh water tank..
Any way for you to take care of the tank weekly??
The tank IF you get them one, needs to be cleaned WEEKLY.
IF they are to unable to care for the fish tank, and you can't help them once a week, then maybe you should rethink your plan.
I dont' want to damper your gift of a tank to them, but when the fish keep dieing from lack of maintinance, that can be more discouraging to them than anything..
IF you do this, how about those neon tetras, YOU can pack in a good 10 or so and they are attractive with the light shinning on them. I saw some red tetras (?) that where very nice. Any of those smaller tropiclas like the tetras, Neons, and dwarf Gouramies would work in a 10 gal..NO barbs! they are fighters and fin nippers. You want a nice speices to relax them not make them upset at fighting dead fish..
Just remember 6-7 1" at adult should be the max for a 10 gal tank to be healthy. IF you have a tank, use some of the water/filter media pad for the 10 gal at lest 1/2 way filled to help with good bacteria to maintain the tank instantly. OR use that cycle. follow directions..
